The 10 Small Things That Fixed My Laundry Room

A black laundry counter styled with glass canisters of wool dryer balls and detergent, folded white towels, a ceramic vase with an olive stem, and woven baskets on the shelf above.

My laundry room came with a wire shelf, two hookups and nothing else.

Nothing I did to it was structural and nothing was expensive. Ten small things, and it went from a blank room to one I actually like walking into.

Here is every one of them, in the order they went in. If you would rather watch than read, the whole room is in the video below.

The ten things

I bought all of these myself. Some links below are affiliate links, which means I earn a commission if you buy through them, at no extra cost to you. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  1. The countertop. The single biggest change in the room. It covers the gap between the washer and the dryer, which is where socks go to disappear, and it finally gives you somewhere to fold. Mine is the black, and it comes in a few other finishes.
  2. Woven storage baskets. I have four of them along the wire shelf. Mine are slightly different but these are the same look. They keep everything within reach and out of sight at the same time.
  3. Wool dryer balls. They live in a glass canister on the counter, which is the only reason they read as decor instead of laundry supplies.
  4. Lint bin. Sits on top of the dryer. A small thing, but emptying the lint trap became a two second job instead of a walk to the trash.
  5. Magnetic hanger organizer. Sticks straight onto the side of the dryer and holds the hangers upright. Before this they lived in a pile.
  6. Dryer sheet holder. Same principle as the canister. The holder is nicer to look at than the box, so it gets to stay on the counter.
  7. Foldable organizer. Goes on the counter when I need it and collapses flat when I do not.
  8. Faux olive branch. One stem in a vase. This is the whole reason the room reads as finished rather than functional, and it costs less than everything else on this list.
  9. Laundry hamper with a lid. The lid is the part that matters. An open hamper is the fastest way to make a tidy room look busy.
  10. Wall mounted towel hooks. By the door, so wet towels go straight up on the wall.

Also in the video

Wooden hangers. These are what the magnetic organizer holds. Matching hangers is a small thing that makes a hanging rail look calm instead of busy.

A few notes

If you only do one thing on this list, do the countertop. Everything else makes the room nicer. That one changes what the room is for.

The baskets, the canister and the dryer sheet holder are all doing the same job. They take the things you reach for every single day and make them worth leaving out, which means you stop putting them away and then hunting for them.

And the olive stem is the one people always ask about. One stem, one vase, and the room stops looking like a utility closet.

One stem. This is the one people ask about.
